GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – It’s the time of year for fireworks, but police want you to stay safe and for you to be able to keep your money.
Green Bay Police Captain Kevin Warych says it is best to leave fireworks to the professionals.
“Every year fireworks cause countless injuries, and cause millions of dollars worth of property damage. We really want to try to prevent that.”
This year, the department teamed up with the bomb squad to show the dangers of fireworks by making a video on Facebook.
“The bomb squad detonated a watermelon with a firework that was a three inch mortar.”
Warych says a three inch mortar can be purchased at a fireworks stand.
“We want people to visualize that, because what happens if that was detonated in someone’s hand.”
Warych says it also important to remember those fireworks and go up and go boom are illegal and could result in a fine up to $376 dollars and confiscation of fireworks.
