GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – Today is the start of National Police Week and agencies locally and around the country will be commemorating the service put forth by officers every day.
Kicking off the week, the Hyatt Regency Hotel, located at 333 Main St., is sponsoring a luncheon from 11:30 a.m. – 1p.m. for all the men and women of the Green Bay Police Department.
Captain John Laux says over 150 people will be served.
“We are hoping to catch all our civilian staff who’s working the entire day shift, midday…we’re hoping some of the afternoon officers that start at 2pm will come in real quick and grab a lunch.”
The Hyatt is also putting together 24 to-go meals for the night shift officers.
This is the second year of the luncheon.
Laux says this week also tends to be a very somber time for members of the force.
“We celebrate our careers and the lives of all the officers who’ve been killed in the line of duty.”
Several members of the department will be commemorating this week in the nation’s capital.
Later in the week, the honor guard is planning a presentation outside police headquarters to remember fallen heroes.
President John F. Kennedy designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day back in 1962.
