The Milwaukee Brewers lost a game and an arm in Sunday’s series finale against the Washington Nationals as the visitors avoided a weekend sweep with an 8-2 victory at American Family Field.
After giving up just one run in the first two games of the weekend, Washington erupted for 6 runs in the 4th inning to build an 8-0 lead. The Nationals got hits from 8 consecutive batters that left starting pitcher Freddy Peralta battered. After surrendering 6 runs on 5 hits, Peralta had to leave the game with right shoulder tightness. The Brewers said Peralta will undergo an MRI scan on Monday but won’t travel with the team as they hit the road this week. It’s expected he’ll be moved to the injured list for perhaps as much as two weeks.
Brent Suter came on in relief and didn’t fare much better, giving up 5 hits and three runs in his two innings of work.
Milwaukee was able to scratch a couple of runs across in the fifth on an RBI from Andrew McCutcheon and a Tyrone Taylor solo home. Scoring chances early against Washington were foiled by three double plays turned by the Nats defense.
The Brewers still won 4 of 6 on the home stand to improve to 26-15 on the season. They hold a three game lead in the NL Central over St. Louis after the Cardinals routed the Pirates 18-4 on Sunday. Milwaukee opens another three city road trip on Monday night heading to San Diego where the Padres are rolling, now 27-14 after a 10-1 blowout of the San Francisco Giants.
Adrian Houser will get the start in the series opener in San Diego. Pre-game coverage begins at 8:05 PM with the first pitch at 8:40 PM on WTAQ.
