GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — Green Bay Metro Fire Department is adding 13 new recruits to its force next week. Those trainees officially graduated today.
Rather than put on an academic cap and stroll across the stage, they put on a demonstration at the Northeast Wisconsin Technical College Public Safety Training Center’s burn building, breaking down doors, rescuing mannequins, and putting out fires.
Kyle Lauf is a Training Captain with the department.
“The demonstration was for the recruits in the academy, to give their families a chance to see what they’ll be doing,” Lauf told reporters.
That puts minds at easy–and it’s quite the spectacle to boot. Lauf says the trainees are of various levels of experience and background.
“We find out who has what in the way of skills, and then we build them up to our Green Bay Standard,” Lauf added.
One of the 13 students is Max White, who has been a firefighter for nine years in Howard, De Pere, and Oshkosh.
“Every time you run a scenario, you learn something new,” said White. “Each department is going to do things a little different, so it’s been a big learning curve to see how Green Bay does things.”
The 13 recruits will be immediately put to work, starting in the community next week.
