BRONX, NEW YORK (WTAQ) – The Brewers have ended the unofficial first half of the season on a high note.
Milwaukee beat the New York Yankees 5-3 Sunday, taking two of three in the weekend set.
For a second straight day, the Crew jumped out to an early lead.
Travis Shaw hit a three-run home run in the top of the first.
Steven Vogt added a solo shot in the second to extend Milwaukee’s lead to 4-0.
The Yankees got three back in the bottom of the fourth, but the Brewers quickly responded with a run of their own the next inning.
Milwaukee’s bullpen delivered a strong collective performance, surrendering just one hit in four scoreless frames.
Jimmy Nelson improved to 8-4 with the win, Masahiro Tanaka dropped to 7-8 in a losing effort, and Corey Knebel bounced back from a rough Saturday, picking up his 14th save of the season.
The Brewers head into the all-star break at 50-41, 5 1/2 games ahead of the Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals, who are tied for second place in the National League Central.
Milwaukee is back in action Friday, when they host Philadelphia for the first of three. That game can be heard on WTAQ, 97.5 FM and 1360 AM, at 6:35 pm.
