GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — A new memorial to Green Bay’s police canines was unveiled Monday morning in front of the Green Bay Police Station.
The statue depicts Neo, a police K-9 who passed away in 2020. Officer Joe Merrill was Neo’s handler, and says it’s spot on.
“It’s almost an exact replica,” said Merrill. “I was surprised by how accurate it was.”
Merrill was with Neo for a decade.
“We were the longest serving K-9 team in Green Bay,” Merrill told WTAQ. “I joked that he was the city’s happiest employee, because he worked for basically nothing but always wanted to go to work.”
Neo’s ashes are actually welded inside of the statue, which was sculpted by the same California artist who works on statues at Arlington National Cemetary in Washington DC. The unveiling kicks off National Police Week.
The Bark N’ Blue foundation raised over $31,000 for the statue. Not a single dollar was taken from taxpayer funds.
