FOND DU LAC, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Advocate Aurora Health plans to expand its existing Fond du Lac health center into a hospital.
Construction on the 70,000-square-foot hospital is expected to begin this month. It will be called Aurora Medical Center – Fond du Lac.
When construction is complete, the facility will have a total of 185,000 square feet, 10 new patient beds and an eight-bay emergency department.
“Having access to high-quality health care locally is crucial,” Jeff Bard, president of Advocate Aurora’s north Wisconsin patient service area, said in a news release. “We know many Fond du Lac residents travel to receive health care services right now, and we believe we can better serve them by offering more convenient options closer to home.”
The $74 million expansion is expected to create more than 100 new jobs in Fond du Lac.
The project was originally announced in 2020, but was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The new hospital will partner with the larger Aurora Medical Center in Oshkosh to provide certain services.
Advocate Aurora last week announced plans to merge with North Carolina-based Atrium Health.
The new Fond du Lac hospital is expected to begin accepting patients in 2024.
It will be the second hospital in Fond du Lac, competing against SSM Health St. Agnes Hospital.
