MANITOWOC, WI (WTAQ) – A federal grand jury has indicted a former Manitowoc County doctor on charges that he illegally distributed prescription drugs.
Metro Drug Unit Lieutenant Dave Remiker says Charles Szyman was most recently employed by Holy Family Memorial Hospital in Manitowoc.
“On Tuesday there was a grand jury indictment, 19 felony counts. Basically illegal distribution. and those 19 counts are related to our joint investigation with Manitowoc County Metro Dug Unit and DEA.”
The investigation began back in 2013, based on reports about the doctor’s prescribing practices.
“It was all based on information and reports that we were getting from several individuals about the prescribing practices of Dr. Szyman. So we looked into it and it was a long process with a lot of medical records, a lot of interviews.”
The indictment alleges he overprescribed a long list of narcotics from the hospital, and outside of his practice.
Szyman will be arraigned in federal court in Green Bay next week. His medical license was suspended last October.
