TOWN OF NEW DENMARK, WI (WTAQ) – Two people were killed and three others injured, including a 17-year-old arrested, after a crash in Brown County Monday night.
According to the Brown County Sheriff’s Office, a two-vehicle crash happened at 8:24 p.m. at the intersection of County Highway X and Glenmore Road.
“Accident appears to have occurred when a pickup truck was traveling southbound on Glenmore Road and failed to stop at a stop sign at County Highway X,” says Capt. Dan Sandberg with the Brown County Sheriff’s Department. “The female passenger, she was killed instantly. She didn’t know what hit her, there was wreckage and damage everywhere.”
Officials say 16-year-old Simon Hill of Greenleaf and 32-year-old Laurie Shaha of De Pere were killed. Hill was riding in the pickup truck along with a 20-year-old unnamed passenger who sustained minor injuries. A 65-year-old driver of the SUV suffered serious injuries.
Devon Robley, who drove the pickup truck, was injured. He was arrested and taken to the Brown County Jail on 2 recommended counts of homicide by intoxicated use of a motor vehicle.
“Because alcohol and drugs are both under the same statutes, that’s why we have to wait for those toxicology tests to come back,” Sandberg says, explaining why he can’t say for sure if alcohol or drugs were involved.
No matter what Robley may be charged with, Sandberg says this is a tragic reminder.
“When we’re dealing with OWI’s, don’t do it. Get a ride, find somebody who’s going to be a designated driver,” says Sandberg. “There’s so many options out there that you shouldn’t be driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. We can’t pound it into our culture enough.”
Robley is not expected to make his first court appearance until at least Wednesday.
