ASHWAUBENON, WI (WTAQ) – Pokemon Go players searching for game pieces around the Ashwaubenon Public Safety building is on the department’s “list of things that are not cool right now,” reads a warning on its Facebook page.
Public safety officials say they’ve seen people playing the smartphone-based game behind the station in the dark and popping out of bushes.
The game encourages players to go to real-world places to find characters that are placed there virtually.
Those playing the game are asked to check in to the lobby before searching for a virtual Pokemon character.
The back of the property is off-limits to the public, the department says.
“If you are asked not to play Pokemon Go at the Public Safety building at that time then please just leave,” the Facebook post reads. “An officer should not be placed in a position where people are hiding in the dark when he needs to get to his patrol car a few feet away.”
Police and fire departments from New York to Seattle have warned players not to congregate around public safety buildings.
While the game has caused headaches in and around some buildings, others welcome the increased traffic.
Bishop David Ricken of the Catholic Diocese of Green Bay took to Twitter to express happiness that the game was drawing players to churches.
