GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Electric scooters and bikes are returning to Green Bay this week.
The city is once again offering the Bird scooters and e-bicycles following a pilot program in 2021.
“We had some of the highest ridership in the country,” Green Bay Planner Stephanie Hummel told WTAQ. “The ridership was there. People definitely had an interest in it.”
It was more than just an entertainment thing, too. People were using them practically.
“With some of their geotracking, they were able to determine that people weren’t just using them to cruise around because it’s fun. They were using them as a form of transportation.
She says e-Scooters, which are seen in some large cities as a scourge, have found a lot of success in medium sized cities like Green Bay, where they can be used to supplement the public transit system.
The scooters and bikes can be activated through a mobile app. Certain low-income riders, Pell grant recipients, nonprofit and community organizations, veterans and senior citizens can get rides at half price. Health care workers and emergency personnel are eligible for free rides.
Riders must be at least 18 years old. They are encouraged to wear helmets and obey all standard rules of the road.
