MENASHA, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – After more than 60 years, a Fox Valley staple has announced it’s closing its doors. Mihm’s Charcoal Grill in Menasha will be no more after this summer.
“Can you say bye-bye?” Matt Schommer of Kaukauna asked his daughters while, like many Tuesday, long-awaiting for their food.
“Bye-bye!” one of his daughters yelled.
And bye-bye is what Mihm’s will be telling the Menasha community June 25.
By the looks of it, many are sad to see it go.
“It’s kinda heartbreaking, and especially for a lot of people that continuously still come here, religiously,” said Becky Norton of Oshkosh.
It was only one day since owners announced that they’d be shutting their doors, and already the place was filled to the max.
“We knew that there was gonna be a little bit of a wait; we expected that,” Schommer said.
Monday, a post on social media notified the public of the news.
“There was always like speculation about it, but then I thought it was like not real,” Kevin Juarez of Appleton said. “I saw it and I was like, ‘Okay, well I gotta get over there,’ ‘cause like I grew up coming here since I was like 13.”
While customers there say the popular spot is always busy, Tuesday was unlike any other. A line outside the door had people with both memories of Mihm’s…
“My mom actually introduced me to Mihm’s, because she used to come here with her sisters after their school dances.”
….as well as those hoping to make new ones.
“This is actually my first time here! I lived in the area for maybe three or four years, but obviously we’ve been a little busy with the little ones.”
Mihm’s has been a fixture in Menasha since 1958. Owners were hoping to sell the business and pass the torch onto new ownership, but that was not to be.
“I think it would be nice if somebody did, I just wish that it stays the same, though,” said Juarez.
Schommer, whose parents frequented the place often for a late-night snack, says he’s hopeful the good times will continue to roll there.
“I hope that somebody does buy, just so that the tradition lives on.”
Norton, whose mother now lives in Colorado, would hate to see the establishment go.
“Somebody please rescue this place! Don’t let it close!”
Mihm’s owners say they will continue looking for someone to take over this piece of Menasha history.
