GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — There are still a lot of jobs open for Green Bay recreation staff this summer. That includes pool lifeguards, pool facility staff, ride operators at Bay Beach Amusement Park, and more.
There appear to be a lot fewer teenagers to fill a lot of these summer jobs–which are typically staffed by those under 20. It begs the question: Where have all the teenagers gone?
Britney Burkart Labar is the faculty supervisor at Bay Beach Amusement Park.
“We have a ton of 14 and 15 year olds eager to work,” Burkart Labar told WTAQ. “It’s those 18 and 19 years olds. We don’t know where they went.”
Ann Moeller is Green Bay’s Recreation Supervisor and she’s only got a guess.
“It used to be you get a summer job, make some money, and have some of that financial responsibility, I don’t know if that’s not a priority anymore. I don’t know, but we’re obviously not the only ones dealing with this,” said Moeller.
It could lead to fewer pools being open.
“We will only run pools that have adequate staffing,” Moeller told WTAQ. “So there may be some discussions here in the coming weeks about what our summer plans are if we cannot fill some of those lifeguard spots.”
Last year, Joannes Aquatic Center never opened up after the city wasn’t able to hire enough lifeguards to safely open the facility. Moeller says they need to hire around 20 more lifeguards to be able to open all facilities.
Burkart Labar says if they want to add extended hours at Bay Beach, they’ll need about 20 more ride operators, aged 18 and older.
Bay Beach will officially open this weekend. It will remain open weekends only until switching to daily operations next month.
