GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – It’s a night where police officers get to know the community they serve a little bit better.
Tuesday law enforcement locally and around the nation participated in National Night Out, an event that promotes a partnership between the community and police.
Mather Heights Park was filled with police officers, squad cars and even a S.W.A.T vehicle, as part of the event.
Green Bay Police Chief Andrew Smith spoke with FOX 11.
“I think it’s important for people to know that the police we have here in Green Bay are the same folks that live down the street.”
Smith along with Mayor Jim Schmit stopped by several neighborhood cook outs, Mather Heights was their second stop.
“That’s the best crime prevent program we can have here, is if we have neighbors getting out to support each other,” explained Mayor Schmit.
“We had a very long stretch without any real serious, violent crimes like shootings and things of that nature, so we are really fortune here in Green Bay to live in such a safe community,” added Smith.
Nationally 16,000 communities participate in this event.
