GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – Brown County District Attorney David Lasee says he’s requesting a special prosecutor look at the campaign finance audit of Green Bay Mayor Jim Schmitt.
“I had indicated when I requested a special prosecutor, I was looking for someone to handle it in a time-sensitive way,” Lasee told WTAQ Wednesday. “I would anticipate that whoever looks at it will be able to do it quickly so that the issue is resolved one way or the other.”
Lasee confirmed that the special prosecutor will be in the Milwaukee County district attorney’s office. He also says he wanted to avoid any appearance of impropriety.
Last week, Mayor Schmitt and 3 Green Bay Aldermen both requested the audit. That happened after a media report showing Schmitt may have illegally accepted $10,000 in his campaign fund.
City council members Chris Wery, Guy Zima and Andy Nicholson say they all want clean elections. Schmitt has said he wants any questions of illegal activity to be put to rest through this audit.
