It was a short and forgettable one game home stand for the Milwaukee Brewers as they dropped a 4-2 decision to the San Francisco Giants Monday evening at American Family Field.
Corbin Burnes put up his third straight stellar start, working six and two thirds scoreless innings while striking out 11 and giving up just two hits. He was taken off the mound after that second hit in the 7th, giving way to reliever Trevor Gott to protect a 1 run lead. The Brewers got on the board in the second when Mike Brosseau singled home Keston Hiura. Gott made it to the 8th where he let a man on and then Joc Pederson took him deep to center for a two run homer and San Francisco moved in front.
Willy Adames had an equalizer in the bottom of the 8th with a solo shot of his own.
After using the key three relievers of Brad Boxberger, Devin Williams and Josh Hader through the weekend in Philadelphia, Manager Craig Counsell turned to Jake Cousins to pitch the ninth but after a walk, Luis Gonzalez launched his first major league home run which curled around the right field foul pole. The Brewers couldn’t answer again as the Giants rolled through 8 pitchers over the nine innings and they combined to allow just five hits.
Milwaukee (10-7) turns right around and hits the road again. The single game in Milwaukee was part of the restructured schedule after the lockout’s conclusion wiped out the first week of the regular season schedule and the open Monday fit for both teams. It’s on to Pittsburgh for a three game set against the Pirates. Brandon Woodruff will start the opener at PNC Park with pre-game coverage at 5:00 PM and the first pitch at 5:30 PM on WTAQ.
