MANITOWOC, WI (WTAQ) – After a long weekend, classes are back in session at Manitowoc Lincoln High School today.
Classes were canceled Thursday and Friday of last week after a ceiling collapsed over one of the classrooms.
An all-school assembly was held this morning so staff and students could discuss what the immediate future will look like.
Superintendent Mark Holzman describes the purpose of that meeting.
“We wanted to make sure that they knew that there were tests that were going on, that there were some rooms that we wouldn’t be able to use until we fix them, and that there are other rooms that will be fine,” he explains.
Holzman told parents that 12 classrooms on the third floor will need additional supports, but the rest of the building was determined to be structurally sound.
The most immediate change will be a re-working of schedules for students and staff affected by the 12 classrooms that remain closed.
“We re-created the schedules for all the kids and we wanted to give them out during their first-hour class and wanted to tell them that as well,” explains Holzman.
Most faculty and students won’t face too much of a change, but some individuals will face a minor adjustment.
“The teachers who are traveling will have a little bit of an adjustment until we can get them back into their regular classroom,” says Holzman. “They are used to having a home base and not having to move from that for the day.”
And while those changes will persist while the classrooms remain closed, don’t expect that to take too long. Holzman expects the affected classrooms to be fixed and re-opened in the near future.
“I would hope by the end of the semester would be the latest, but we’re hoping a few weeks,” he says.
