GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – Students at a Green Bay high school made a special climb for a special anniversary.
To understand, they say you have to walk a mile in their shoes.
All day Tuesday, Students and staff climbed the bleachers on the football field 11 times, which is equivalent to one tenth of what the 110 firefighters had to climb 17 years ago.
“I may be a little uncomfortable but that is okay. I have others in the community supporting me and that is exactly what happened on September 11.”
Assistant Principal Micah Hoffman says enough years have passed that all students need to learn about the events of that day though the history books, but Sophomore Marshall LeCloux says wearing full fire equipment and marching was a better way to learn.
“It was quite difficult to move around in it. It was very heavy and very hot. I might as well go full difficulty if I am going to go all out.”
Hoffman said the day was about reflecting on the events of the day that will never be forgotten.
“I am sweating right now and this is just a tiny portion of that. I can’t fathom what it was like on that day.
Hoffman says it is another way to give the students an educational experience in addition to reading about it in the history books.
LaCloux says even though he was not born when the events took place, he has learned a lot by events like this and reading the books.
“How they had to go us so many flights of stairs and how far they had to travel.”
The climb was organized by the West Physical Educational Department.
