GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – Hurricane relief efforts tend to bring out the generosity in many, but that does not mean you don’t have to be careful of where you are sending your money.
With the aftermath of Hurricane Florence comes charitable giving.
The Better Business Bureau says times of disaster brings out the best in people, but can also bring out the worse.
“There are some great charities, there are some scam charities and then are some with great intentions but are not necessarily well run.”
Susan Bach, Regional Director of the Better Business Bureau in Northeast Wisconsin says a common way people look to donate money is through Go Fund Me.
“People who set up crowdfunding pages like that are certainly well-intentioned, but you know they are not professional charities. The last time I checked, there was almost 500 for Hurricane Florence.”
She says if you don’t know who set the page up, you don’t know for sure that they have the knowledge or the means to get the money where it needs to go.
Bach adds doing research is the best way to avoid being scammed.
“Just make sure that if you give with your heart that you use your head first.”
