GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – Green Bay Metro Fire Department is still working to help those affected by flooding Monday evening.
Fire Chief David Litton said they had to rescue and evacuate.
“Over 100 people were evacuated from seven different buildings.”
72 residents were displaced from Bay Manor Apartments on Bader Street, and the American Red Cross is assisting those in need at Celebration Church on Humbolt Road.
Chief Litton said Green Bay Preble High School is normally the site they use.
“We lost power at Preble High School right before we started the evacuation, so we had to move on to Plan B. We had to use the church because it was the highest ground and that was really at that time the only route that we could get people to and from the scene that we were evacuating them from,” Litton said.
As of Tuesday afternoon, 60 displaced residents remained at the church.
“We are looking for relatives to come to pick them up.”
Chief Litton said they spent much of the evening rescuing people from vehicles that were stranded in flooded streets.
“During the middle of the storm, our crews rescued approximately 50 other people who drove through barricades, around emergency vehicles, and into the water and then required emergency assistance.”
He says it was a prime example of why they tell people don’t drive on flooded roads.
“You don’t know how deep the water was. In that area of Main and Mason, the water was six feet deep. Assistant Chief Goplin was blocking the road with his emergency vehicle with lights on and people were driving around him like he wasn’t even there.”
Many residents were without power.
