ASHWAUBENON, WI (WTAQ) – Looking back at 100 years of Packers history, before Lambeau Field was Lambeau Field, it was farm property, and one piece stuck around for a while.
The Packers first home went by a different name in the 1950’s.
“Green Bay City Stadium and referred to as New City Stadium when it was dedicated in 1957.”
Team Historian Cliff Christl says one other unique aspect is what used to stand on that property.
“They didn’t build an Administration building until 1963, and that was when they were finally able to buy the Vannieuwenhoven Family farmhouse.”
Christl says the Vannieuwenhoven Family owned a farm on that property until a football field popped up in their backyard.
“When they bought the property out here from the Vannieuwenhoven family to build the stadium, they refused to sell their farmhouse in the West parking lot.”
The Vannieuwenhoven Family owned farm was located along Ridge Road, across from what is now Kroll’s West until 1963.
From 1959 to 1963 people who parked west of the stadium might remember a small barn and I think there were some small animals.”
The farmhouse is seen in old photos of the stadium.
