GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – While Breast Cancer Awareness charities are thinking pink in October, Consumers may need to do a little thinking of their own.
“It is great to support that charity, but you definitely want to do a little research first before you purchase that product.”
It’s called Pinkwashing.
Susan Bach, Regional Director of the Better Business Bureau of Northeast Wisconsin says consumers spend money on products thinking that money spent will make a difference in the fight against breast cancer, but in some cases, that is not what happens.
“None of the proceeds from the purchase will actually go to help any of the breast cancer charities. They are trying to capitalize on the pink theme where people might think that they are supporting breast cancer research.”
Pinkwashing is possible because it is easy to use the well known pink ribbon on products.
“That pink ribbon that people use to identify breast cancer awareness is not a trademark logo of any kind.”
Bach says when buying products for breast cancer awareness, the charity that is being supported should be on the packaging.
If donating to a charity, it is recommended to research the charity on the BBB website, donate with a check rather than cash, and be wary of high-pressure tactics.
