GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — It’s Public Safety Telecommunications Week, highlighting the importance of emergency dispatchers.
Cullen Peltier is the Director of Brown County Public Safety Communications and says the industry is struggling with a lot of the things others are struggling with.
“We’re still dealing with some of the COVID issues, and we’re dealing with the same staffing issues that other industries are,” Peltier told WTAQ. “W’ere going to be dealing with the staffing issues for quite some time. We’re doing our best to fill those spots, but I think it’s going to continue on at least through the next year.”
Peltier says that 911 operators are an often overlooked part of emergency response.
“We’re the ‘first’ first responder,” said Peltier. “We’re the ones who get the call. We’re the ones who direct the responders where they need to be in the best and safest possible manner.”
Peltier says there’s a movement across the country to recognize 911 operators as first responders.
