BROWN COUNTY, WI (WTAQ) – Health officials say four cases of Salmonella have been confirmed in Brown County.
That’s among a total of at least seven cases across four Wisconsin counties.
Wisconsin Department of Health Services officials say the Brown County cases are linked to fresh, loose peas sold at the Downtown Green Bay Farmers’ Market on July 22, with similar problems reported from the peas sold that day at the Madison and Fond du Lac farmers’ markets.
Peas that were still in their shell at the time are not included in the advisory.
Health officials say the affected peas are no longer being sold.
Anyone with peas purchased from one of the listed farmers’ markets between July 19 and August 5 are advised to dispose of whatever supply they have left.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says salmonella causes those it strikes to develop diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps 12 to 72 hours after infection.
Anyone who consumed peas from one of the three named farmers’ markets and are experiencing those systems are advised to call their healthcare provider.
CDC estimates roughly 12,000,000 illnesses and around 450 deaths are caused by Salmonella poisoning each year in the U.S.
Elderly, infants, and those with impaired immune systems are more likely to have a severe illness.
