NORTHEAST, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Two human cases of West Nile have been reported in Northeast Wisconsin.
Department of Health Services officials say the state’s first two confirmed cases of 2017 are in Oconto and Fond du Lac counties.
They say West Nile is spread by mosquitoes and note the chances of contracting the virus are low.
Those who become ill may develop a fever, headache, and rash that lasts a few days.
Symptoms may begin 3-15 days after being bitten.
Health officials say there’s no specific treatment for West Nile except for treating the individual symptoms.
In rare cases, West Nile virus can cause severe symptoms such as muscle weakness, stiff neck, disorientation, tremors, convulsions, paralysis, and coma.
Older adults and those with compromised immune systems have a greater risk of severe disease from the virus.
