GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – A Hazmat team and FBI were called to the Green Bay Police Department Monday afternoon after two employees got sick after opening an envelope received in the mail.
Chief Andrew Smith says a captain and secretary were opening an overnight envelope with a cardboard tab. When they pulled the tab, they immediately felt ill.
“They described their sensations as weak in the leg, weak in the extremities, queasy, a little bit dizzy, and in an abundance of caution, we gave them a dose of Narcan,” said Smith.
The incident happened around 3:30 and the building was evacuated shortly after.
The two employees were transported to a local hospital.
The Hazmat unit completed a preliminary investigation and found no evidence of a substance.
Smith says the air conditioning in the building was reversed to blow all the air inside the building out and the Green Bay Metro Fire is helping air the place out with fans.
“We’re going to make sure the envelope is triple sealed and we’re going to send it off to the FBI for them to analyze and we’ll take it from there,” Smith said.
Headquarters is scheduled to reopen around 7p.m.
