GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – Two Green Bay Police Department employees are back at work Tuesday, one day after becoming sick after opening an envelope that came in the mail.
The incident happened Monday which caused a Hazmat team and the FBI to evacuate the building. It was reopened just a few hours later.
Chief Andrew Smith says they still don’t know who sent the letter or what the possible substance was that caused the captain and secretary to become ill.
“The postal inspectors has been very helpful. We believe there may be some false information on the front of the envelope so we are going to continue to analyze that and see if we can get to the bottom of that,” Smith said.
Smith says the envelope was addressed to the police department but not a specific person.
And although the two employees are back at work, Smith says they are keeping a close eye on them.
“The big concern is if they start to experience flu-like symptoms, then that might be indicative that they’ve gotten something whatever was in that envelope.”
When the incident happened, the employees were given Narcan as a precaution and were taken to the local hospital.
The FBI has taken over the investigation and is analyzing the envelope.
