OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ) – A report of a student with a gun forced Oshkosh North High School to be placed on a brief lockdown while police investigated the situation.
Oshkosh Police Chief Dean Smith says while no actual threat occurred, their response was swift given the information they received Thursday morning.
“The student was found on the grounds and seen coming into school, then he could not be located and we received information that a gun was missing from the house.”
Police were told by the student’s family on Thursday that a firearm may be missing from their home, which prompted the school to go on lockdown at 9:30 AM.
Smith says at the same time, they learned that events leading up to this began earlier in the week when the mother of the student reported to a school social worker Wednesday that her son was displaying erratic behavior.
Then Thursday, school officials contacted the teen’s mother and police after he was seen on school property, but was not in class.
“15 officers and detectives from the police department responded to the school in response to the call.”
The student was later found off school grounds by the police and no weapon was found. The family later reported that they were able to locate the firearm at home.
“It has been determined that at no time were students at Oshkosh North in any danger,” Smith said.
School District Superintendent Vickie Cartwright says while no threat was found, they were forced to act swiftly.
“All threats to our schools, students, and staff are taken seriously and investigated thoroughly by local law enforcement.”
The lockdown was lifted at 10:15 AM.
After being found near the Oshkosh Correctional Institution, the teen was taken to a medical facility to be treated for pre-existing medical conditions, and his mental health.
