GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – An allegedly troubled Green Bay school has started a new year.
Washington Middle School welcomed students back today with an assembly that covered behavioral expectations and the culture the school hopes to establish.
Principal Dennis Christensen says “we want to make sure that students understand policies and procedures and expectations of how we do things, and that they are part of that solution.”
Christensen believes making progress will be a collective effort.
“One of the clear messages is that of communication, share more, and more often, so that parents know what their child is doing.”
District officials have been working to make changes at Washington since a former teacher made allegations of an unsafe environment for students and staff when she publicly submitted her resignation in June.
The school has made multiple staff additions, including an assistant principal, counselor, and three support teachers to help in various classrooms.
Tracy Lenobel is one of those teachers.
“We’re supposed to be in the rooms. We’re supposed to be helping there. Because we’ll be in house, we’ll be able to sub, which is perfect.”
Parent Travis Mckeefry is looking to move past the alleged problems from the past few years.
“I’m ready for everything to be positive. I think a small thing got blown out of proportion. I just hope that they follow through with the things that were set up.”
Mckeefry’s son is entering the eighth grade.
