DE PERE, WI (WTAQ) – On the night before the election Governor Scott Walker was in De Pere making one last effort to rally support amongst voters.
Amerilux International in De Pere was the final stop on the Governor’s statewide tour as he took the opportunity to highlight Wisconsin’s thriving workforce and dispel, what he called, slanderous claims made by opponent Tony Evers about him.
He thinks those negative claims are a big reason why polls have the race neck-and-neck.
“Unfortunately it shows you just how effective attack ads that repeat the same lie over and over again [are],” says Walker.
At the top of the list of false claims, according to Walker, is the notion that he won’t cover pre-existing conditions.
“I think the biggest thing keeping us from a sizeable win, right now, has been the big lie about pre-existing conditions,” he says. “We will always, always, cover people with pre-existing conditions in this state.”
According to him, that’s a claim that his opponent can’t make.
“My message to Tony Evers is he should be ashamed of himself for what he has done to people facing serious diseases and ailments in this state,” says Walker. “They should never have to worry about coverage.”
That isn’t the only fundamental difference between himself and Evers though, according to Walker.
“Tony Evers plan would be higher property, higher income, and higher gas taxes, and that would cost us jobs,” he says. “We don’t want to go back to those days, we want to keep moving Wisconsin forward.”
And according to Walker, that’s exactly what the state workforce has been doing while he’s been in office.
“It’s all about educating and training the workforce, it’s why we put more actual dollars into our schools than ever before,” says Walker. “It’s why we nearly tripled the youth apprenticeships.”
Walker highlighted recent statistics to showcase the state’s strong workforce.
“In 2018, there are more people employed in the state of Wisconsin than ever before in the history of this state,” he says. “In fact, we’ve had eight months in a row of record unemployment.”
Come Tuesday morning where will the Governor be? Well, that’s a personal tradition.
“We’ll be at Kroll’s West where every election day I get deep-fried cheese curds.”
