GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – For months the state Department of Veteran Affairs has worked to expand services for military veterans living here in Northeast Wisconsin.
Monday, it finally unveiled one of its new programs.
With more veteran services available for those here in Wisconsin, veterans like Jeff Pemberton are able to get the help they need.
“Sometimes people have problems with employment or substance abuse issues and they find housing and employment difficult and even mental health issues where they need help and professional resources.”
In August, the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs was awarded a grant to expand the state’s Veterans Housing and Recovery Program to Green Bay.
Ken Grant works as a division administrator for the state’s Department of Veteran Affairs.
He tells FOX 11 the grant will provide mental health services, substance abuse treatment and temporary housing for a veteran in the area.
“We have clinician to help them deal with mental health, PTSD and anxiety issues, like a lot of veterans face. And then we bring in the treatment programs and use our nonprofit organizations and be one big community to give the veterans what they need.”
Making sure veterans are in good mental and physical health is something Grant says is necessary to help find them jobs and get them back functioning in society.
“Green Bay, like a lot of areas, have and right now employers want to hire veterans. So we partner with the local job center and they will come over and meet with the veteran to get them job ready.”
That’s a service Pemberton says he looks forward to using when the program officially opens up at the end of November.
