GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – With Republicans and Democrats both having success in Wisconsin Tuesday, history shows that is not uncommon.
A democrat US Senator, but many Republican State Senators and State Representatives all found themselves on the winning end of the vote totals.
Wendy Scattergood, Political Science Professor at St. Norbert College says Wisconsin has seen this before.
“People in Wisconsin are pretty good at saying, okay this is what is going on in the state and this is what we want here, versus saying this is what is going on nationally and separating that in terms of their vote choice.”
She says two big factors tend to lead to a split in state vs national elections.
“A lot of that has to do with turnout, but a lot of it has to do with this idea of backlash.”
She says it is the idea of wanting to have the parties check each other and by voting that way, it allows for that to happen.
While many of the seats in the State Legislature went to Republican’s, Wisconsin did elect at Democrat Governor Tuesday.
