GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Loaves of bread sit on tables at Green Bay Community Church.
Though they weren’t there for long.
Leadership Development Specialist Kathryn Kroll says the support Wisconsinites have shown for those still in Ukraine has been overwhelming.
“We had a $1,000 check come in,” said Kroll. “We’re having people donate $100 bills.”
And as the war continues with no signal of its end, the church knew it was their turn to make a difference.
“We started taking donations last week when we announced the to the church that we were doing this, some of the donations came in,” said Kroll.
Those donations go to World Central Kitchen.
Located in Ukraine at boarder crossings, the organization serves meals to refugees.
The church saying it spreads the message of unity.
The idea was formed by a volunteer and Green Bay Community Church member. Hoping to raise $3,000, they’ve more than doubled that amount.
Patty Hendrickson thought of the fundraiser two weeks ago, after seeing horrific videos of the damage in Ukraine.
“I just want to do something more,” said Hendrickson.
In total, the church raised $10,928 for World Central Kitchen.
“If we can make some kind of dent in helping them, it’s just again human kind,” said Hendrickson. “We have to take care of the world, not just our little area of the world.”
Just under $11,000 raised and close to 450 loaves of bread sold later – Northeast Wisconsinites are doing what they can to help those on the other side of the world.
