APPLETON, WI (WTAQ) – A waste compactor fire presented multiple obstacles for Appleton firefighters on Thursday morning.
The incident happened just after 8 AM when crews were called out to 908 N. Lawe Street.
Firefighters were faced with working next to an active railroad line, cold temperatures and unknown products on fire inside the compacting dumpster.
The cause of the fire is being investigated and no significant damage to the compactor was found.
A safe work zone was established as a train passed through as crews worked with Canadian National Railroad.
A backhoe was used by Appleton Public Works to pull out industrial waste from the compactor so the fire could be put out.
