GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Firefighters from Green Bay Metro Fire were able to escape a dangerous situation after responding to a duplex fire Friday morning.
The fire happened Friday morning in the 1500 block of Beech Tree Drive on the city’s west side.
“There were two vehicles in the garage and the garage was fully engulfed,” said Assistant Fire Chief Rob Goplin.
Five adults and two children were able to make it out of the home safely.
After the fire was put out, a crew went back inside the building.
“While they were going through the kitchen, the entire ceiling collapsed down on them and they were stuck underneath that for some time.”
Goplin said they then declared ‘Mayday”
“So whenever anything like that happens and you become trapped in any way, we train firefighters to declare a “Mayday” which is a universal term to signify distress.”
Goplin said they were able to self-rescue without assistance from other firefighters.
The Red Cross is assisting a Green Bay family after a duplex fire.
Officials estimate the fire caused about $100,000 in damage and investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire.
