GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – What would you do if a police officer knocked on your door and then handed you $100 for doing absolutely nothing?
300 people found out what that was like on Friday afternoon as local officers handed out VISA gift cards.
The Green Bay Police Department and the Ashwaubenon Department of Public Safety traveled into sections of the city where they thought people needed the most help and handed out $100 VISA gift cards.
“So this gift card, dropped off at people’s houses or handed to people on the street, is going to be something wonderful that’s going to allow them to maybe get their kid that backpack or school clothes or school supplies,” says Green Bay Police Chief Andrew Smith.
Ashwaubenon Public Safety Captain Jody Crocker says he’s thankful to be a part of this community outreach.
“To be able to go out this afternoon and to make just a 100% positive impact on everybody that we’re able to encounter, is not only a treat for us, it’s also a treat for the community and it shows that we do really care.”
The initiative was possible thanks to Broadway Automotive and their donation of $30,000 to help foster goodwill between local law enforcement and the Greater Green Bay area.
Broadway hopes the gift cards will be used to pay bills or purchase needed items like food, school supplies, or clothing.
