GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – For the first time ever the Catholic Foundation of the Diocese of Green Bay will be shipping a large container filled with donations to the Dominican Republic and Haiti.
Bishop David Ricken will be blessing the 40-foot package Wednesday, September 14 at 10:30 a.m. It will take place at 7407 County Rd. F in Newton, WI.
World Missions Coordinator Cindy St. Aubin says there’s a wide variety of items being sent.
“We have a used tractor that will be in the container. We have medical equipment, anywhere from walkers to wheelchairs to needles and surgical equipment, exam tables.”
The donations will also include a school bus and equipment for a bakery.
St. Aubin says the poorest of the poor will be benefiting from the gifts.
“I’m excited…we have it (the container) about half full right now and we’re going to continue to pack the rest of it. I’m anxious to see how much we have in it and how much more we can fit into it.”
Collections started earlier this year on May 1 and continued through September 1.
The container will travel from a farm in Newton, WI to New York and from there, it will travel by ship to its final destination in the Caribbean.
“We also have to itemize every single item that goes into it (the container) for customs and also have that translated into Spanish before it can leave. We’re hoping it will leave our area a few weeks from now,” says St. Aubin.
Costs to ship the donations will be over $12,000.
