DOOR COUNTY, WI (WTAQ) – A sea of red dots the Door County landscape at Steve Wood’s Orchard near Jacksonport.
“They’re still getting bigger. However, they’re ripe, they’re ready to pick”.
For the last week, crews have taken teamwork to a new level, using ladders to pick, and snip acres and acres of SweeTango Apples.
“We had a good growing season. We had ample rains. and plenty of heat units, so I think everything is pretty much on time”.
Wood and his family grow apples on about 150 acres throughout Door County.
From the orchards to the roadside stands, Door County apples are moving quickly.
Schartner’s Farm Market owner Dave Schartner says it’s been a good summer.
“The apples are going to be really wonderful. They got good flavor this year, because of the warm weather we had, and the size is good”.
Meanwhile, back at Wood Orchard apples were gathered and sent to a Sturgeon Bay warehouse to be sorted.
Steve Wood says the apples will soon be shipped to local farm markets, and grocery stores across the state and into Minnesota.
“The apples are big and plentiful. So I think we will probably have a bumper crop this year”.
Varieties like the Honeycrisp are still about 10 days to two weeks from being ready.
The season for apples, with its typical harvest in Wisconsin of 54 million pounds, generally lasts until the end of October.
