GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – A suspect has been arrested in connection with a fatal shooting in what Green Bay police say was a drug deal gone bad.
Police announced Thursday morning that 28-year-old Richard McKinney was arrested in Milwaukee. Interviews with witnesses led them to identify McKinney, who has not been formally charged, as the suspect.
Green Bay Police Chief Andrew Smith has a strong message for individuals wanting to come to the city to commit crimes.
“I think people need to know that Green Bay’s different. Across the country we see homicides like this that go unsolved. The message here, is if you come to Green Bay and commit a crime like this, we’ve got a dedicated group of police officers and detectives that are going to find you and we have a community that will work with the police department and supports our police department and will cooperate with our police department to get you into custody.”
Smith credits the hard work of detectives with the prompt arrest of McKinney.
Officials say 20-year-old Guled Abdulkadir Hirsi was shot and killed at a home in the 700 block of Cherry Street last Sunday in a heroin deal.
Hirsi was the suspect in the April 2 burglary at the Islamic Society of Wisconsin mosque on Green Bay’s northwest side.
The investigation continues.
