ASHWAUBENON, WI (WLUK) – Some parents at Parkview Middle School in Ashwaubenon are concerned that the enforcement of the school’s current dress code is singling out young girls, and taking away from class time.
The attention is focused on skin-tight pants such as, spandex, yoga, or leggings.
The regulation states which if worn it “must be with covered by shorts or a loose shirt that is at least fingertip length in both the front and back.”
“My outfit today violates the dress code,” said Christine Smith Assistant Professor of Human Development, and Chair of Women and Gender Studies at UW-Green Bay.
She has spoken with some of the parents who have voiced their concerns at Parkview.
“These girls are just trying to be comfortable, think about it something like leggings. This is very comfortable yet they’re being pulled out of class for this? Their education is based on whether or not their shorts are longer than their fingertips”
Park View Middle school principal Kris Hucek issued a statement saying, ” We plan to meet privately with the parents and student regarding this specific situation, as we would in other similar cases.”
Wisconsin Association of School Boards says when it comes to public schools, and dress code rules and regulations there is always room for change.
In a statement association spokesman Daniel Mallin wrote, “If parents, teachers, school administrators, or school board members feel that certain provisions of a dress code have become impractical or unnecessary to enforce, the good news is that school dress codes can be revisited and modified at just about any time.”
A parent-faculty club meeting is scheduled for tonight (MON).
