GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – A local organization has stepped up in a big way over the last week to help those in need in Ukraine.
Saturday, volunteers from Wisconsin Ukrainians sorted and packed essential basic items for Ukrainians in need.
They are for civilians, soldiers and doctors.
Volunteers packed the supplies into a truck at St. Matthew Orthodox Church.
This follows several days of collecting various essential goods in the area.
As back-and-forth continues over a ceasefire, one organizer says the need for Ukrainians is “urgent.”
“They need boots, winter clothes, long johns, they need kids’ clothes, blankets, sleeping bags, everything that will help them to stay in the shelters or help them while they’re working to the western border of Ukraine and cross the border to Poland, Romania, Bulgaria,” says Oksana Kovzar, Wisconsin Ukrainians’ secretary.
Kovzar added there has been “unbelievable support” from the community since they started the efforts.
The first truck will go to Chicago today, and then supplies will be flown to Poland, before going to Ukraine.
