APPLETON, WI (WTAQ) – Ground is being broken on an airport expansion project.
Appleton International Airport Director Abe Weber explains what’s all included in the $6.8-million dollar terminal upgrade.
“Enhancements to our security checkpoint, completely revamping our restaurant and gift shop – adding larger menu items and more local souvenirs. We have a customer experience center that we’re going to be putting in there.”
Weber says “we know how frustrating it is for passengers to have to wait in the security checkpoint, so we’re thrilled to be able to improve that process by adding a third lane.”
He notes the funding is about “60% FAA grants, 20% state grants, and then the balance is airport funds.”
Weber says the effort has been in the works for years.
“Since 2012, we’ve seen nearly a 30% increase in the people that walk through our door. We’ve added an airline, we’ve added destination, we’ve seen larger aircraft, and we’ve increased the number of flights.”
He hopes work will wrap up by July.
