TOWN OF PESHTIGO, WI (WTAQ) – Authorities say a white male in his thirties is dead after being shot by an officer in Marinette County.
Sheriff Jerry Sauve says it started shortly after midnight Thursday when they were called to a Marinette motel room.
“A handgun was shown through the door. I don’t know if this was a robbery attempt or some sort of domestic incident.”
Sauve notes they used cell phone activity to track the suspect to a Peshtigo home.
“When the officers got there, they saw a male subject exit a residence there, get in a vehicle, and leave in a vehicle. An attempt to stop the vehicle was made as the vehicle turned south onto Schacht Road and partially entered the ditch. The suspect exited the vehicle and was armed. The officers ended up firing.”
Sauve says none of the four officers, two Marinette County Sheriff’s deputies and two Marinette Police officers, at the scene were injured.
They have been placed on paid, administrative leave.
Sauve is unsure how many of the officers fired at the man.
No names have been released, but Sauve says the deceased is someone who was not known to his agency.
The Wisconsin Department of Justice is investigating.
Sauve says the motel has some surveillance video but did not confirm that there was any dash/body cam footage for them to review.
The state DOT says Highway 64 has reopened, after being closed for roughly 13 hours.
