A handful of area athletes brought home gold medals from the WIAA State Wrestling Tournament at the Kohl Center on Saturday night.
Highlighting the list of champions is Clayton Whiting of Oconto Falls who took the Division 2 title at 182 pounds. Whiting became the 22nd wrestler in state history to earn championships in all four years of his career. Greyson Clark of Kaukauna earned a third straight championship in Division 1 at 138 pounds. Also in D1, De Pere’s Shane Corrigan capped an undefeated season at 51-0 by beating Lucas Peters of Kaukauna in the 123 pound final. At 145 pounds, Jacob Ward of Bay Port earned a gold medal. In Division 2, Max Ronsman of Luxemburg-Casco captured the title at 138 pounds and at 145, Caleb Muenier of Winneconne defeated Nathan VandeHey of Freedom for the crown. A pair of wrestlers in Division 3 also won titles, Karson Casper of Coleman took first at 145 pounds, a special moment for his father and coach, Kevin Kasper who announced his retirement after a long, successful run at Coleman High School. Brant Cracraft of Mishicot took gold at 170 pounds.
The field is set for the WIAA Boys and Girls Hockey Championships this weekend at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison. Appleton Xavier will be the top seed after defeating the Green Bay East Co-op team 7-6 last Friday in the sectional final. Xavier will meet Onalaska on Thursday. The other semifinal will pit DC Everest against Middleton.
The Notre Dame Tritons are heading back to state after a 7-2 sectional final victory over Neenah. The Tritons will be the number two seed and take on Edgewood in the Division 1 semifinal on Friday. Hudson will be the top seed facing off against University School.
The Division 2 field features top seed Rice Lake against Lakeland and #2 seed St. Mary’s Springs, seeking a third straight title, playing Baldwin-Woodville-St. Croix Central.
Regional champions were crowned on Saturday in the Girls State Basketball Tournament. Area teams advancing to sectional semifinals this Thursday night are Hortonville taking on Neenah with Appleton East meeting Superior in one bracket. De Pere will face Divine Savior Holy Angels in another Division 1 sectional with Kaukauna taking on Germantown. In Division 2, top seed Notre Dame will face Fox Valley Lutheran. Division 3 sectional matchups have Freedom meeting Xavier and Brillion going up against Kiel. St. Mary Catholic will play Bonduel in a Division 4 semifinal.
