Ozan Kalafat of Bay Port High School had quite a weekend in the pool. At the WIAA State Boys Swimming and Diving Championships, Kalafat won two events, the 200 meter free style race and he broke the state record in winning the 500 meter free style. Kalafat was over a second faster than the old record set in 2009. Appleton North’s Sam Bork also won two individual events, the 50 and 100 meter free style races. Will Hayon of Sheboygan North set a new state record in winning the 100 meter butterfly. All three boys swim on the same Mid-Wisconsin Wave Makers AAU club team.
Regional titles were claimed in the WIAA Boys State hockey tournament. Notre Dave Academy, the top seed, advanced with a 5-1 victory over Beaver Dam. The Tritons will now face Fon du lac, a 3-2 winner over Bay Port, in a sectional semifinal on Tuesday night. The sixth seeded De Pere/West De Pere co-op team, upset third seeded Ashwaubenon 3-2 to move on to a sectional semifinal date with Neenah.
The boys seedings and pairings are set for the WIAA Boys State Basketball Tournament. In Division 1, Fox River Classic Conference leading De Pere will be a two seed with Menomonee Falls earning the sectional bracket’s number one seed. Notre Dame is seeded first, Ashwaubenon second in the Division 2 bracket and Brillion will open tournament play next week as a number one seed in Division 3. The girls state tournament begins with Regional openers on Tuesday night.
