MARINETTE, WI (WTAQ) – Ships built for the U.S. Navy at Marinette Marine Corporation have been in use in strategic areas in the Far East.
The Littoral Combat Ships — each built at a cost of about $360 million — are playing a crucial role in a strategic and volatile region in the Far East.
As power struggles continue in disputed waters near the South China Sea, the USS Forth Worth deployed to the area between February and May. A new ship, the USS Little Rock, may be posted there after the vessel launches this coming Saturday.
Several other vessels are under construction at Marinette, and the Navy has said it would like to buy more.
Marinette Marine employs 2,500 workers and contractors.
