APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – The Appleton School Board voted Thursday morning in a special board meeting to make masks optional starting Feb. 28 for grades 5K-12.
The board originally voted in November to lift its mandatory mask mandate Jan 18, but with the COVID-19 omicron variant surge, the topic was revisited last month and the decision was to extend its face mask policy.
Masks will still be required for Early Childhood and 4K, and they will be required for all students on public or school transportation.
The board’s Monday vote comes before the release of the CDC’s expected new mask guidance. Those recommendations could come as early as next week.
Appleton’s decision on masks follows similar moves by the Green Bay and Oshkosh districts, as well as the University of Wisconsin System.
