GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – A teen involved in bringing a gun to East High School was convicted in juvenile court Wednesday and will spend a year being supervised by the county’s human services department.
State law does not allow the media to identify those charged in juvenile court.
A gun was discovered in a locker at Green Bay East High School in December.
A 15-year-old boy was previously found delinquent – the juvenile court version of being convicted – for his role in the incident. The disposition hearing is scheduled for Feb. 23, although the teen was expected to be transported to Rawhide Youth Services near New London before then.
In court Wednesday, the 16-year-old girl admitted to carrying a concealed weapon and obstructing an officer. She was found delinquent. A count of possession of a firearm on school property was dismissed.
Before the sentence was issued, she apologized.
“It will not happen again,” she said.
Judge Timothy Hinkfuss noted the serious nature of the charges, and the impact on the community.
“It’s a scary thing, especially for people that have children attending the school,” the judge said.
The girl was placed on supervision by the county for one year, ordered to perform 100 hours of community service and write a letter of apology to the school district. She also must participate in victim impact panels and undergo counseling. Additionally, she may not have contact with the boy charged in the case.
If she violates any of the release terms, she could spend up to 90 days in the juvenile jail.
She was expelled by the school district for the incident, defense attorney Scott Ceman said.
The school district submitted a written victim impact statement and did not comment at the hearing. FOX 11 requested a copy of the statement but was denied as the juvenile file is closed to the public.
The incident at East High happened a week after three social media threats against Preble High. Four teens are facing juvenile court charges in those cases, as well.
The combination of the threats led the school district to place all middle and high schools into online learning for several days in December.
