GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – Repeat drunk drivers are still a problem on Wisconsin highways.
According to Gannett Wisconsin Media, 822 drivers were convicted last year of their 5th OWI arrests or more. That’s 3 more than the 819 convictions from 2013.
Half of the state’s 72 counties saw either no change, or higher arrests last year for 5-time offenders or more, compared to the average of the past five years.
There are a couple of bills pending in the state Legislature to crack down on chronic drunk drivers.
One would give longer prison sentences to 5 and 6-time offenders. Another measure would raise penalties for 3-time offenders or more.
