OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – What started as a child’s dream is now reality for Tournament Director Devan Kuether.
“When I was a kid I always dreamed of having a pond hockey tournament on Lake Winnebago,” said Kuether.
For the third year in a row, he’s put on the Otter Street Pond Hockey Tournament.
Offering locals a chance to lace up on the lake.
“This was the first of my knowledge of a pond hockey tournament of any substance in the area,” said Kuether. “I grew up playing hockey since I was a kid, this is what we used to do.”
Four different areas with small pieces of plywood around each one serving as the boards are all the players need.
Allowing them to skate freely up and down the ice.
Zach Wilson is participating for the very first time
“We decided to do it because we had the weekend off from our team back at school so decided to do it, kind of fun,” said Wilson.
Adding, so far, it’s been a relatively easy tournament for them.
“We’ve kind of smoked the last two teams we played,” said Wilson. “But we’ll see what the competition brings.”
The players love the competition that the day brings out, but what they enjoy even more is the comradery that goes along with it.
“It’s a good time for all of us to get together and enjoy time with friends and family,” said Kuether. “We got a lot of families that bring their kids out to watch their moms or dads play hockey and it means a lot to watch this sport grow in front of the eyes of the community.”
And it’s fun being able to tell some of your buddies that couldn’t make it, you got to play in a pond hockey tournament.
